The Dirty Blues laid a whipping on the Fog Devils on Friday night. It was a battle of former China Sharks and China Dragon stars, Guo Da Chuan (Danny) and Wang Zhi Qiang (Wanger) and though the latter scored a beautiful end to end goal, Danny’s team had the last laugh. Down 5-2 in the middle of the 2nd, the Fog Devils thought they had their third when DB’s goalie Jamie ‘the Krawler’ Krause pulled a magic trick on the officials to avoid the small two goal cushion. With the net off the moorings for a split second, Krawler pulled the net back in place just as the Fog Devils penetrated his area. After a short conference, the officials ruled no goal and the Dirty Blues never looked back. The 2nd ended up being the only close period as the complete artillery of the Blues was firing to end up with an 11-4 victory. The Fog Devils can take some consolation in the fact they were severely under-manned and didn’t do much to support their man between the pipes.

Ice Cocks roasted the Ducks Friday night with a 4-2 win. The score was closer than the play as Shin stopped 95 of 99 shots sent his way. Ice Cock goals were scored by regular snipers Spahr and Takagi with Ohlrich extending his hot steak and super Kiwi James Kerry getting his first of the year. Karl was huge in net for the Ice Cocks but the Ducks finally scored late with goals by Simon and Bergie.

The Saturday night slate of games kicked off with one for the record books as the last place Drunk Vikings (3W, 14L, -42 Goal differential) were finally able to overcome the “officiating conspiracy” that has plagued them all season to defeat the league leading Paper Tigers (15W, 2L, +46 GD). The game was an instant classic and has officially gone down as the biggest regular season upset in Shanghai Hockey Club and Asia Beer league history.

The first period was a fast paced, back and forth affair until Stu “So hungover” Chan found himself on a breakaway with 10 seconds left and put a nifty move on Barry to give the Vikings a slim 1-0 lead after 1.

The Paper Tigers were able to tie it up in the second as John Antooppalous(sp?)….Anthopopolopous(sp?)……..fuck it – the kid with the nice flow sniped one top cheddar.

Entering the third, tensions were high. The Vikings, however, came out the hungrier bunch and Adam “The Rook” Liu was able to secure their first win in months with a top shelf snipe of his own. Mike Custer sealed the game with an empty net goal late in the period for a final score line of Drunk Vikings 3 – Paper Flies 1. Rob Gray turned back the clock 10 years (maybe 20?) and played his best game of the season in net for the Vikings.

Afterwards, completely ignoring the adage ‘Act like you have been there before,’ the Vikings celebrated like they had just won Shangley’s cup. The Vikings raped and pillaged the SHC liquor cabinet and broke another SHC record by throwing the largest regular season bottle night in league history. It was legend…..wait for it…. DARY.

Brennan scored on a giveaway from Scotti to put APL in the lead 1-0. The crabs woke up when the lines were shuffled for the start of the 2nd period. Cobbett got the Crabs first goal after a quick line change found him behind APL’s D with the puck. Taggert banged home the 2nd goal put make it 2-1 crabs. Rupert found his own rebound in the 3rd for the final goal.

With a chance to move in to sole possession of third place, The Bulldogs went in to Saturday night’s match up with the pesky Pandas with standings on their mind. With the leagues first bottle night since the And the game wasn’t two minutes old before Perro broke in from the blue line uncontested and for the first time in three seasons didn’t choose to go upstairs glove side but instead went to the backhand and buried a simple little deke past the outstretched arms of other iron man goalie of the league Barry Roe filling in for the pandas and once again wondering where half their team was.
Later in the first it was the Dogs showing some offense at the back with Andy Sigfrieds receiving a great feed in the high slot that he deposited in the back of the net as a strange changeup-probably his ode to spring and baseball season kicking off.
After the first period it looked a lot more even and the Pandas set the pace. Even with the low numbers they were flying around and creating pressure and finally broke through on a Graydon rebound in front. This type of play continued back and forth with Mans turning aside a few great opportunities and Barry getting peppered with shots that wouldn’t find the back of the net.
It stayed close until late in to the third until a crisp tic tac toe by the Bulldogs finished off by Cal Wong was yet again a dagger for the competition and what has now become a bit of a signature shift for the boys in Yellow putting teams away late.

The last game of the night was a dogfight, as the Puckhounds took on the Fu Dogs. The Fu Dogs were a bit shorthanded as Jason Ferron ran off to get married. Worried that he couldn’t score without his line mate, he took Martin Magnan with him. With the Fu Dogs missing their French Canadian Pocket-rockets, Puckhounds’ Captain Jason McKelvey decided to test his theory that his team played better without James Dodd and made him a healthy scratch.
PHs opened the scoring in the first when a Jeff Wong screen shot through traffic found the net. Fu Dogs closed the period strong though, with Ron Berg netting 2 late goals about a minute apart. The second period both teams tallied 2 goals. Yuzo Yamada got credit for a goal when Fu Dogs defenseman Jake Kovacik tried to catch a fluttering puck and instead knocked it into the net. Sam Xu added another. On the Fu Dogs side, Brent Campbell got both goals, one on a beauty feed from Bill Longstreet. In the third, Mark Qin tied it with a slick redirect.
OT started with the Fu Dogs shorthanded, allowing them to play dump and chase the full length of the ice. The Puckhounds coughed the puck up to a forechecking Campbell deep in their zone. He got off a harmless weak ass backhander, but the rebound went directly to the ice man, Ron “The Ice” Berg, to ice the game and send the Puckhounds back to the cellar.
Congratulations to Jason & Lilly!

Ducks beat down the first place APL squad(4-2). Ducks Hippy Shindy got an opening goal with his hip. And Ducks kept slight lead to the end. APL tried 6 players attack in last minutes. But Chris’ solid goal-tending and solid defense and good fore-checking didn’t allow a goal. Instead, Bergie’s shot slammed into the empty net. Bergie made 3rd hat trick since converted from D to F.  As a result of week 17, APL finally lost 1st place. And Ducks moved up to 3rd place.

Saturday’s heavyweight bout between Paper Tigers and Dirty Blues was an exciting matchup that captivated our watchful eyes this week. The PTs were without dynamic forward Yosef Natour and DBs were without number one Donald Trump supporter, Brian “everybody in the club get Trump’d” Wallace, Vanias, Marko, JK and Cole Paterson who is still recovering from leaping from a burning building. Another question mark for the DBs was Mike “last minute” Mann. Hats off to Kentaro (captain of the Ducks), who stepped in and played a hell of a game for the Dirty Blues. Goaltender Barry offered up some juicy rebounds during the first few minutes of the game while the Dirty Blues peppered him with shots. Substitute tender, Mans, controlled the game early by directing loose pucks to the corners. A stifling forecheck in the first period by the Blues created problems from the Paper Tigers. A seemingly desperate Tiger team forced a puck through the neutral zone which was broken up by the Dirty Blues defensive unit. A quick strike materialized in the other direction when Danny Guo fired a puck into the back of the net. Dirty Blues up to an early lead. Paper Tigers took possession and mustered a valiant scoring attempt but Freddy Mercury Nyquist pulled a bohemian interception and protected the one goal lead. The teams traded penalties to end the first, no harm, no foul.

As the second period began, the Dirty Blues gave up the puck as the Paper Tigers had another scoring chance. Captain JP Grimard was called for an invisible hooking penalty, as he clambered into the box leaned over the glass, as he screamed, “INCREDIBLE”. He must have been speaking about the Dirty Blues’ performance thus far. Always a classy, complementary competitor! Following a slew of penalties Captain Jan Velich was called for interference and David Badunkadunk Dunkerley for high sticking.
As Velich stepped out of the box, he put a nice mid air pass to Michael “tick tock” McClocklin who was hungry for his first point of the night. As the two titans of the A Division battled it out, the second period remained a hard fought battle. The teams traded takeaway turnovers between McClocklin and Harrison. Ryan Harrison continued his strong defensive performance for the remainder of the second period.

The DBs continued to swiftly move the puck around the Paper Tigers zone. As the puck moved back to Freddy Nyquist he unloaded with an absolute laser beam that beat Barry. After this pivotal goal, the Dirty Blues put on their blue suede shoes and danced their way to victory. Danny Guo added another bomb as the Blues kept rolling. Barry remained calm as he denied Hide on a breakaway chance.
Another goal came from Danny Guo as he took another pass from Jan and Mike to put the exclamation point on a one-sided victory. As it turned out, it was not White’s Night. The Dirty Blues have handed the Paper Tigers their only losses of the year in a convincing 4 – 1 defeat of the first place Tigers. Is it time the Paper Tigers throw in the paper towel?

The Ice Cocks and Fudogs continued their recent trend of tight games with their first early game matchup of the season. The Fudogs put the pressure on early and often, with Brent Campbell scoring on a rebound and ensuring he got it on video to watch on repeat with his strap-on Go Pro. After weathering the storm, the Ice Cocks found their legs, literally, as Mushy deftly deflected BOOMi’s pass interception with his calf and sent the winger on a partial breakaway, which he buried in his first game back. The “Roosters in Red” continued their onslaught with slick center Takagi feathering a sweet pass to BOOMi for his second goal of the game. Emergency goalie backup Shin saved some Ice Cock tail on repeated chances by the Fu Dogs, whose frustration seemed to boil over in an emotional third period, keeping the game a hotly contested by both teams till the final buzzer.

Saturday night action in the SHC saw the Killer Pandas, who are notoriously lazy and non-committal, face off against the ferocious (and cleanly shaven) Fog Devils, who were licking their lips when they saw the Panda’s reduced squad of 7 skaters hit the ice for warm-ups. The game turned into an unexpected battle, and the max capacity crowd loved every second of the action. In the end, the Pandas came out on top, 4-1.

“I don’t even know what the hell happened out there,” devilishly handsome Hans Von Meister said after the game. “I’m usually way better. Like, so good you guys. But to be honest, I kept getting distracted every time I skated back for the puck in our own end. I would catch my reflection in the glass and just be floored by the smooth-faced aerodynamic beauty looking back at me.”

Some of the dedicated, sell-out crowd, however, felt it had more to do with a big 1st intermission speech given by Panda’s team captain, Hanky-Panky Slaney, who recently found out he’s going to be the father of Irish twins for the third year in a row.

Hackin’ a dart on the bench between periods, “Slane-dog Millionaire,” as he is un-affectionately known, was seen jostling Panda’s newcomer, Brett “I can’t believe I’m finally scoring goals, this is bullshit” Simonini. After his empty-netter in the third made the game 3-1, Simonini, despite tallying a natural hat-trick, angrily skated back to the Panda’s bench, shaking his head and complaining about how his wife never puts out anymore. He declined to comment on his performance after the game, complaining instead that: “Astrill is a fucking gong show. How the hell am I supposed to watch any good porn now? All I can access is Joey Goo movies!”

The battle between the pipes also pumped some serious excitement into the enthralled masses watching feverishly from the stands. Mans Rasmussen, a fresh call-up from the Serbian elite league, flew in for the night to fill in between the pipes for the Pandas, much to the chagrin of the Devils’ call-up, Brushten Vlaodorsbk, who used to play nets for the Bosnian national squad. Rasmussen had a beauty of a night, only allowing one goal on approximately 47 shots and 2 or 3 assassination attempts by Vlaodorsbk.

Unfortunately for the Fog Devils, sharpshooter and all-round hockey legend, Wang (he need only be referred to with one name, dude’s a legend), couldn’t seem to get his mojo going against Panda defender, Joey Goo. Goo, whose actual age is a goddam mystery, came out and played defense for the pandas despite being called off the set of his newest porn flick, Joey Goo does Shanghai, Vol. 34. He had this to say after the game, “Shen me? Wo bu ming bai ni shuo shen me.” Which is usually his response to every fucking question ever. Learn some fucking English, Goo.

In other news, injury-prone Graydon Tullis made a return to the action, loaded up on a cocktail of antibiotics to fight off the drug-resistant strains of no fewer than 5 STDs he picked up on his band’s recent tour. He was seen adjusting his jock uncomfortably after potting an empty netter to make the game 4-1.

Puckhounds finally get rid of the fate of the SHC “at the bottom, with a 3-1 scores over Hairy Crabs. Puckhound in Brian Byrne and with the cooperation of plate Kaz scored early. The two goals are rebounded from the wall and frank Fielding. This tricky goal reminiscent of the late 90 s, the great Red Wings. However Puckhound momentum has slowed in the second quarter, foul appeared frequently, the reason is in the penalty area ice bucket that fresh and delicious (tsingtao beer). Dressed in a yellow shirt you have left Puckhound goalkeeper Jackie went to drink, don’t know will someone please him to drink a bottle of after the game. Fortunately strong Puckhound tenacious hold more than four dozen less crazy attack. At the time of beer to drink Puckhounds return to 5 dozen 5, depressed for a long time Harvey He in front of the door a clever hook the ball straight guide each other goal the top left corner. Crabs didn’t give up, at the end of the game when last less than 1 minutes scored a not too big a part of a 3-1 end game. Puckhound goalkeeper Jackie with his strongest performance pleasure to lead the team from the bottom, in the dressing room after the game everyone with full load of Qingdao beer to celebrate, to share his skills and abilities.

In the Sunday morning edition, it was the surging Bulldogs taking on the boys in green in the Vikings who are still looking for answers to find some more Ws. Captain of the Vikings, The Viking himself, Siggy Sigve Kelpsvik, had noted the reason for their woes being it was the 5th bloody time they would to face Mans because every other damn team is without a goalie. It wouldn’t get easier as at the other end (and in the right jersey) was the talk of the league, Mans Rasmussen. The Swede stood on his head early, scrambling in the paint stopping a barrage of crease crashing opportunities. After a few weeks absence the bulldogs were also happy to see back this year’s number one overall pick and scorer leader for the Bulldogs, Cal Wong. He proved his worth with getting the Dogs on the board with two after the Vikings had solved Mans with their persistence. The game was tight and remained 3-2 late until a funny bounce on a errant pass for Wong went straight in to the back of the net which was a real dagger for the Vikings. It was really game of strange bounces that could have gone either way. The late Saturday nighter is turning in to SHC equivalent of NFL’s network’s Thursday night football where a few will tune in for the techni-color jerseys and drink a few beers but won’t stay for the slop. In the end it was Wong with all 4 and another win for the Bulldogs at 4 to 2.

Week 16 Summary –

Friday night started with A League game between Killer Pandas and Paper Tigers.

Pandas leading scorer Rich Rhoades, Graydon Gullis and Thorsten Hinrichs watched the game from press box and Tigers were missing defenders Dunkerley and Liukko. Defender pair is rumored to be participating Jyrki Lumme hockey school in Seoul to prepare for the playoffs.

Both teams started the game strong and we did not see any goals until end of the first period. First Tigers’ Yosef Natour scored directly from the face off, but soon after Mark Simon tied the game (1st, 1-1). “I just had to send Pitkanen back to the bench and take the face off. He has not won a draw since December” Natour commented after the first period.
In second period both teams had good scoring chances, but we only saw one goal from Tigers’ Johnny Atha”pick an alphabet”s (2nd, 2-1).

In third period Pandas were pushing to tie the game again, but Barry Roe and strong defense kept the net clean. Johnny A and Dom Straessler continued their scoring strikes by finishing two goals for the Tigers (Final, 4-1).

APL’s recent slide continued against the suddenly red hot Fu Dogs.

The game proved to be a nail biter throughout. Jon Boot of APL started things off in the first with a quick blast off a rebound from a shot from Peter “the Mayor” Helenius. However, Longstreet answered with two goals off rebounds in the second. The game remained 2-1 until 5 minutes left in the 3rd when the APL recaptured the lead with two quick goals from John Brennan.

With a minute left, the Dogs pulled their goalie, and almost immediately, Larcombe found Magnan in the slot for the equalizer. The Dogs continued their momentum into the overtime period with Berg netting the winner with seconds left.

When asked for a comment after the game EC said “we All Played Lousy”. Boot however disagreed with his coaches assessment and said “we were just Absent Puck Luck”. Regardless, all agreed it was Another Painful Loss.

The Ice Cocks continued their winning streak beating the Puckhounds 5-2. Takagi played a giant game leading the ICs with 2 goals and 2 assists while Markus Spahr banged in two and Brian Ohlrich also scored a beaut. Kaz Mitzutani played his last game in the SHC and made it count setting up several goals. Good luck back in Tokyo Kaz! The Puckhounds could only manage 2 goals despite good efforts. Suzuki’s first goal of the season was huge – a blast from the slot through King Kong Karl’s five hole. Dodd also scored what we think is his first goal of the year.

With a whole bag of doublecheeses on the line, the Foggy Ds and Bulldogs squared off looking to keep up the high scoring and entertaining games between the two squads this year. Captain of the Bulldogs, Tyler Perro took the Hansie approach of crushing two doubles before the game that made the difference for the FDs in the last tilt.  It seemed to work and early on and the Bulldogs got out to a two-goal lead with two beauties from Swiss national, Adrian Ruegg.  The Fog Ds came back to tie with two quick ones but after some hard work and slick passing the Bulldogs pulled the two back to head in to the final period. In a chippy third period, once again the Ds came firing back with two quick ones and after some late digging and greasy work in front from Fog Devil’s pts leader Isaac McKitrick we got our quote of the night, “I PLAY to the whistle, WHAT’S UP?!”. He was also later quoted that he is trying to jack up his PIMs to get him in the best position for next year’s fantasy draft. With the game tied at four and just over two minutes to play it was Justin Brown who moved the puck up ice with space and made a sweet feed to Big Ryan Baerg who has been on an absolute tear since joining midseason and once again he sought out the inside post from the slot to neatly tuck home the eventual game winner.  Breezer to Baerg, Burger to Brown, Bulldogs win.

In the 10:15 game the Vikings were looking to climb up in the standings and add to their growing win column after a slow start to the season. When asked how they will play against the notoriously dirty Dirty Blues, team Captain Ziggy said this: “Dirty Blues is just the name of a team. Every team in this league battles for wins. Giving one team or another some kind of reputation would only work in their benefit. We’re going to come out and play our game and not worry about how they play. If we win our battles we will win the game.” The Blues Captain was a little less diplomatic. Jan said this: “Every game we talk about how we can injure the other team. Cole is out with his own injury but he still came in to tell us how we might be able to throw the Vikings off with some rough stuff early on. Hockey? We don’t really care about that part this sport.”
As predicted the Vikings never voiced a single complaint. They stuck to their game plan and stoically tried their best to get revenge on the power plays instead of the deaf ears of their imagined audience. Their focus paid off in the second period when they found the back of the net first after taking advantage of a lazy clearing attempt by the Dirty Blues.
But the lead didn’t last long. Danny Guo found time in the slot and outwaited Vikings net minder, tucking it top shelf for the equalizer. This first goal almost knocked the Vikings off their game plan but again the captain and his goalie led by example by showing where their priorities lay, in the game itself.
Unfortunately, the Blues lack of talent seemed to continue to work in their benefit. Jan’s frustrated shot attempts devolved into hail marry passes to the front of the net. Two of these attempts went in off McClocklin’s face and arse. Another bounced off of Hide’s stick without him even knowing it. The result was a 4-1 lead that lasted most of the third.
As time ticked on, the Vikings turned up the heat. After what seemed like hours of pressure possession in the offensive zone they finally potted their second. But the game wouldn’t be long enough for a comeback. The final score was a 4-2 Dirty Blues win.
McClocklin commented: “We were lucky to get out of that one alive. They were a different team this time around. There wasn’t anything we could do to get the edge. I can see them finding more success in the last games of the season with this new attitude. For us, we can only hope that luck stays on our side ; ) ”

In the midnight match up, return of Cobett was not enough to help the Hairy Crabs get a win over the battle harden Ducks. The game was tight with Shin stoning the Crabs of several sure goal attempts. Small hands Bergie was all over the score sheet for the ducks with 4 dingers, an assist and penalty. 2 late empty netters pushed the score to 6-3 for the Ducks to stop a 2 game losing streak.

The Shanghai Ice Cocks cracked the Hairy Crabs open Friday night for a controversial 2-1 victory. It was a going away celebration for slick skating  Kaz Yamakazi Mizutani and newly skating James Kiwi Kerry of the Ice Cocks. Jun Otsuka of the Crabs is also leaving this month and although he still can’t find the store that sells Yamakazi, we still like him. These are 3 great guys that will be missed. A possibly inspired Kerry set up the first goal with a deft feather pass to Ten Finger Takagi who displayed his best scoring touch to direct the puck past Jason Delor. Several Crabs later commented that Takagi had the hands of a true goal scorer. Later in the game the ever alert Mizutani jumped into the offense to get a shot on Delor who made one of many stops on the night but Markus Spahr was there to bang in the rebound. Some generic player for the Crabs made it interesting scoring in the final minute but it was too little too late. All was not lost for the Hapless Crabs however as the uber cool IC’s took them out for beer and Jagers (to help them get over their Ice Cock Envy).

After two periods, the Fog Devils had a comfortable 6-0 lead. Then, Hans Von Meister, the captain of the Fog Devils decided to give the worst intermission speech in history. And no, he didn’t share his life story. Needless to say the Fog Devils began the third period flat and the Vikings took advantage scoring 3 quick goals to make it interesting. However, Hugo Thalen and Tosh Suzuki finally decided to back check for the first time in their careers. This helped sustain the lead for the Fog Devils and they came out on top 7-3, winning the final game Takeo their goalie will play.

The Fu Dogs / Ducks matchup was a battle for third place. After the Fu Dogs started the season a dismal 0-4, regularly getting man handled, they have been steadily moving up the standings and starting to play like contenders. The Ducks got out to an early lead behind Shindy Nakatake’s first period goal. However, not even Gordon Bombay trickery could help the Ducks keep pace this night. The Fu Dogs responded with five straight goals in a balanced attack with contributions coming from up and down the roster. Magnan, Masa, Ferron, Campbell, Longstreet all scoring. Captain Kentaro added a late goal for the Ducks but the Fu Dogs still came away with an impressive victory to move past the Ducks and claim third place.

Dirty Blues and Pandas game was held on Saturday. Pandas without Rhinorhoades, Horsecock Thorsten and Babymachine Slanedawg had a huge disadvantage. Our reporter talked to Pandas defenseman Shane Anderson before the game about this issue. “Yeah, fuck, it’s a big problem. We need a full team to kick some ass. But I just got a BJ before leaving home so I’m all good”, Shane noted. Considering Dirty Blues had a full team except Defensmen Cole (who thought he’s a Spider-Man and tried to jump from his balcony and seriously sprayed his ankle) and JK, who was substituted by Barista from Tigers. Final score was 5:1 for DBs – led by the first line with Danny-2 goals, Mike-2 goals and Jan-1. Our reporter asked DBs striker Danny for his summary about the game: “Good game”, stated Danny. And Jan added: “All teams are getting ready for the playoffs. Remaining games are are preparations for playoffs. Pandas were missing key guys today but showed some good heart and were tough team to beat. I expect all games will be 1 or 2 goal difference games from now on. It’s time to get ready for some good hockey.”

The 10:15 game on Saturday pitted the B divisions first place team, APL, against the last place team, Puckhounds. If you had been in the Puckhound locker room prior to the opening face off you wouldn’t have heard the most inspiring words but something occurred between lacing up the skates and all the sarcastic remarks in the room. APL scored first on a 2-on-1 breakway after Jackie made a great save Brennan stuffed in the rebound. The puckhounds tied the game at 1-1 with a redirect goal by Dodd in the second. It could have gone in directly but he was still rusty from a week off and buzzing start. From there the game was a back and forth battle highlighted by clutch saves at both ends of the ice. Overtime had an exciting finish with breakaway opportunities kicked aside by both Jackie and Casey. The game eventually went to a shootout, Brennan put in a shot, McKevly answered, then both goal tenders made huge saves before Yuzo put the game on ice. The Puckhounds won their second straight, 2-1, in shootout fashion.

The final game Saturday was a matchup between the Paper Tigers and the Bulldogs, who were without sniper Cal Wong. The Dogs made up for missing their leading scorer by committee, playing with a lot of energy.  The Tigers were also missing their young sniper, Johnny ‘The Flying Greek’ Athanasopoulos. The two teams ground it out for most of the game until the Tigers broke the 0-0 tie in the second off of a tip-in by Ryan Harrison from captain JP ‘New Grill’ Grimard. Why a defenseman would be in the position to tip a shot from his defensive partner, nobody knows. The Tigers kept the pressure on throughout the third period with strong play from the Pitkanen-Zheng-Straessler line. Dominique ‘Hot Swiss Chocolate’ Straessler added to the PT lead with his first goal of the year in the third period. Recent Bulldogs addition Boston Dan Woishek lead their comeback effort, potting a goal in the third to cut the lead in half. The game stayed tight until the end despite some fishy timekeeping by a group of drunken hooligans in the booth and a thwarted empty netter, which would have been a sure thing if not for blatant interference on Yosef Natour by clearly biased official Mark Simon. The Paper Tigers held on to win 2-1, becoming the first team to get to 14 wins on the year.

Week 14 Summary –

Kicking off week 14 of the SHC early Friday night was a tough matchup between the Fog Devils and the Paper Tigers. With the lost of their goal scoring machine, David Smith, and a short bench, the paper tigers got off to a rocky start trailing 1-0 going into the second. Tiger’s tender Barry Roe recalls the first period vividly. “I easily faced more shots in the first than I have the entire season. I finally broke a sweat on the ice.” The fog Devils were just slapping around the PT’s with their Foggy D’s until 2 quick goals on the Mansinator in the 2nd by Johnny A, shifted the momentum. Johnny credits his second goal to Tom Jones’ “It’s not Unusual” as he and Mark Simon were doing the Carlton dance at the face off dot before the second snipe. Another notable incident was PT’s captain JP Grimard catching a high stick from the Fog Devil’s centre, Wang, getting a jib and a sexy lip scar. A quick goal in the 3rd as the Tigers got into some questionable penalty trouble sent the game into 3 on 3, then to shootout, where John Pezel sniped a solid 3rd round cheese on goalie Mans, winning the game for the PT’s by a score of 3-2. Tiger and FD players easily compared Pez’s shoot out winner to the precision of Patrick Kane and the finesse of Datsyuk.

The Bulldogs and the D Blues kicked off an entertaining Saturday with a tightly contested affair. After Yellow went up early on goals from Wong and Perro, it was all goalies where notably one of the finest saves of the season was made by Mans Rasmussen getting a paddle on a puck after spinning around in the crease to rob a sure goal in to a gapping cage. the Blues were persistent and finally broke through with some great work in the corner both near the end of the second and starting the 3rd by team scoring leaders Janzy and Danny Guo. It went down to the wire and with just over two minutes left it was Bulldogs second half addition Ryan Baerg picking up another hard earned helper from behind the net, feeding an unmarked Cal Wong alone in front who made no mistake. Bulldogs 3. Dirty Blues 2.

The PuckHounds might as well take away the clever play on words and simplify the name to Duck Hounds after they tracked the Ducks down for another victory.  The Ducks came out flying with an early one goal lead but the PuckHounds and a light bench could not be deterred as they took a 2-1 lead in the middle of the game. Sam Xu stormed down the right side from his own end to rip a shot of the Ducks keeper and then tap in the open rebound.  Eddie Tsui wanted everyone to know that he came to play scoring in his first shift (even if that meant he arrived in the second period).  The short bench finally caught up to the Puck Hounds when the Ducks tied the game 2-2 with -0.5 seconds on the final game clock.  Toronto upheld the contested goal based on a late whistle from the referee.  Game referee’s were quoted as saying “It wasn’t us, we know how to blow.  It’s the Taobao whistles fault”.  Luckily for the PuckHounds,  Yuzo continued his dominating skating ability into overtime and took advantage of a Duck falling down in 3 on 3.  He stormed in alone and sniped it right past the keeper for a dramatic finish and PuckHound victory.

In black vs green A game Killer Pandas snap a 3 game losing streak and defeated the Vikings 3-2 in a 1 goal takes all sudden death shoot-out. Killer Pandas were yet short again and had to rely on calls from their franchise brethren, Foo Dogs  players Martin and Berg. It ended up being a good call as Foo Dog player Bearg score twice to help the killer pandas to a shoot out. Thorsten Herichs tallied the only marker in the shoot-out to lift the Killer Pandas to a victory.

The final game of the weekend was the Ron Berg show. After subbing for the Killer Pandas and potting two, Berg continued his assault on team Green by getting a natural hat trick in the first period… AND the second period!! He came up short in the third only scoring two for a total of eight goals. While Bergy had the hot hand, his line mates Martin Magnan and Jason Ferron were buzzing around tiring out the short handed Crabs, feeding Berg in front of the net over and over again.
The final was 10-2 with Whately & Tag scoring for the Crabs and Martin and Longstreet scoring the other two goals for the Fu Dogs.

Week 13 Summary –

(Photo credits to Joseph Hu and Puckeye)

In the battle of the basement dwellers to kick off Week 13, we saw the Vikings take on the Bulldogs.  It was a back and forth affair that took the teams all the way to 3 on 3 then in to a shootout.  It was the newcomers, Big Baerg and Boston Dan who buried the first two shootout goals to give their new team the two points and have been an instant fit.  Shin took the double cheese honours with his best Mansinator impression, standing on his head throughout the game and stonewalling the last two Vikings in the shootout. 5-4 yellow. With full squads, the buoys on both sides looked all right and should compete in the second half of the season.

The Hairy Crabs won their second game in a row Friday night with a gutsy 5-4 over time victory against the Puck Hounds.
Despite a couple late scratches–most notably captain Leon–the Crabs were able to come from behind throughout the game.
Through the first two periods the teams were deadlocked at 3. Taggart tallied two goals in the first two frames and Whately scored a short handed goal after pick pocketing the puck from the goalie behind the net and burying the puck in the empty goal.
Taggart scored the equalizer with less than a minute to go in the game and the Crabs down 4-3. With the goalie pulled the boys in green threw everything they could on net before Taggart finally tipped a point shot from Back-up Bob. It didn’t take long in the three on three for Matt Whately to bang home the game winner for his second on the night.

The Paper Tigers and Dirty Blues early contest on Saturday night started out fast paced, with both teams vying for a ‘W’ in David “Jungo” Smith’s last game in the Shanghai Hockey Club. The PT youngsters Smith and Johnny A. combined for 5 goals on the night with Antti “Jagr” Liukko providing solid defense and one assist contributing to the 6-0 victory. Beyond the points and whatever he does on the ice, Antti contributes to the young Tigers players in countless other ways. He pointed out the combined age of Jungo (22) and Johnny A (17), is lower than his, which is what makes his work ethic and ability to prepare off the ice that much more impactful on the young Tiger stars. “You hear that from a guy like [defensemen] J.P Grimard or (forwards) Harri Pitkanen and Yofa. I mean, they take care of themselves, but they’re doing that extra little bit more because they have the aspiration to be like [Antti]. There’s also the added benefit for the older Tigers that makes them feel younger than they are. “It feels like I’m still wearing diapers when I’m next to him,” said Tigers goaltender Barry Roe. Both teams will look forward to the next tilt which should be much more evenly matched with Cole Paterson, Michael McClocklin and Danny returning to the Blues lineup. The Tigers lead the season series 2-1.

In a surprise move by Ken’s pinch hitter captain Tommy, small hands Bergie got called up to play forward.  After a couple shifts of getting acquainted to his new position, Hawk-eyes Large threaded a needle pass to give Bergie a breakaway which he buried to give the Ducks a 1-0 lead.  After some bad line change from the 8 man APL, Large and Bergie ended up with a 2 on 1 where a rifle pass to Bergie and some stick handling magic gave the Ducks a 2 to nil lead.  To convert the natural hat-trick later in the second, “short stick no more” Simon fed Bergie in the slot and tipped in his 3rd tally.  APL later scored early in the third.  Solid goal-tending, solid defense and good fore-checking from the forwards helped beat down the first place APL squad.

Fog Devils put together a strong team effort this Saturday in their 5-3 victory over the Killer Pandas. Ice Cocks franchise-mates Barry, Markus, and Kaz all came up to help. Assistant Captain and first star of the game, Kitamura Sensei delivered an emotional game prep speech, moving fans, teammates, and the Zamboni driver to tears. In a heart-warming tale of friendship and dedication, and with double-cheeseburger in hand, Kita moved the team into a frenzy with his passionate and touching Haikus.  Center Kevin Hill said, “Our minds melded, our mission became one. I love the Fog Devils.”

In a season where they have struggled to score the Ice Cocks finally potted more than 2 goals in a decisive 4-1 win over the Magnon-less Fu Dogs. Captain Campbell soon forgot about the sweet passing little Frenchman though, as the Ice Cocks managed to set him up beautifully in their own end for the first goal – a high wrister over Krazy Karl’s shoulder.  Not to mention any names but after the giveaway the guilty Cock was shaken, not stirred. That wake up call caused the Cocks to come back hard as they pressured call up goalie Toshi continually.  The big goalie played great position in net and seemed impossible to beat. Finally Vancouver road hockey sensation Trevor ‘Boomi’ Lai illustrated how to beat Toshi, burying 3 in a row for his first SHC Hattie. Along with Spahr and Mushy their line applied pressure start to finish.

Week 12 Summary –

The Crabs winning 3-2 against the Ducks finally snapped out of its 7 game loosing streak since the infamous Longstreet-Cobbett incident (aka the "Longstreak"). The win was the product of mid season draftee Taggart "Tag, I'm It" Thomson who lead the team with its first goal, followed by Backup Bob Leiske's blue line slapper, and finally captain Leon Li sealed the win with a top shelf wrister in the 3rd period. Ducks' forward Simon Pinard contested on the reffing for not calling unsportsman like conduct on BB Leiske after being called a French Fry during the latter half of the second period.

After a slow, disapointing start to the second half of the season, The Drunk Vikings finally gave their fans something to cheer about in the New Year. They shocked the rough and tough Dirty Blues with a convincing 5-3 victory. Mike Custer started the scoring spree with a beauty from a dead angle, Barry “The Great Laowai wall” didn’t stand a chance. Adam “The Rook” Liu also showed his worth as Jim Dunn expressively said “I’m inspired by this boys talent, every time he walks in to the locker room, I feel safe”. He managed to score 3 golden ones. Fans are saying that the dirty “Dirty Blues” lost because they kept playing full contact hockey in a beer league, and with that many penalties, they are probably right! Blues captain Jan "Janzy" Velich was unavailable for comment after the game due to the fact that he had shotgunned too many beers and was making out with a cardboard box.

The Puckhounds cruised by the Ice Cocks in a 6-1 victory. The Ice Cocks came out hard with a one goal lead but then went soft letting 6 unanswered goals by. Puckhounds were lead by Brian Byrne converting two rebounds in for goals. Ice Cock Captain, Duke the Dazzler said "Eh, what do you expect for a team that enjoyed the Beatles live?"

Foggie Ds worked together to crush the Bulldogs in an impressive victory on a snowy Friday night. The crowd, referees, and scorekeepers were blown away by the machine-like precision passing, dynamic and adaptive play calling, and deadly sniping. Center Hugo Thalen did not even take a rest, staying on the ice for a full 51 minutes. After accepting his first star of the game, he mentioned to the eagerly awaiting press, "I trained hard over the break, working on my upper body strength with a vigorous fist-pumping regime at M1nt. The Korean saunas really helped with my recuperation, too." Second star Isaac McKitrick attributed his success to the double cheeseburger that he kept on the bench for a mid-game energy boost. Coach Kita said that the teams' victory was due to the trust-fall exercises done in the locker room before the game.

The APL- Fu Dogs matchup finished off a weekend of upsets in the B league with the 5th place Fu Dogs handling first place APL 4-2.
Last week a large contingent of Fu Dogs traveled to Beijing to compete in the Hou Hai pond hockey tournament. But this week the Fu Dogs were back a full strength and Keeper Kevin Lee was back between the pipes and came to play! When asked about APLs potent scoring line led by John Brennan, Kevin said he was not concerned. In fact, he was really only worried about Dennis Larcombe scoring another own goal as he did in Beijing.
Steve Lockhart opened the scoring for the Fu Dogs but that was quickly answered by APL. Brent Campbell got the next two markers to give the Fu Dogs the lead for good. Bill Longstreet would add another goal. In the late moments APL tried to stage a comeback, but Miles Liu's goal with just a couple minutes left was too little too late.
EC was heard crying in the showers knowing this loss would almost certainly eliminate him from Coach of the Year contention for The Sports Personality of the Year Awards.

Key players missing for Pandas lead to lopsided 7-1 score.  Despite having a strong defensive core and a goal by Geoff Ng, the Pandas were taken down by the dynamic scoring of Japanese sensation, "Smitty" who finished the game with a hat-trick.  Paper Tigers offensive defense-man Ryan Harrison also contributed two goals by standing on the opposition goal line and deflecting the puck into the gaping net.  Puck possession was dominated by the tigers in the offensive zone as forwards changed position with defenders and kept the puck moving from side to side and from point to slot.  Despite the many chances the Tigers had to shoot the puck from all over the zone, call up goalie Gray was able to make some outstanding saves, including two incredible sprawling stops on grizzled veteran play-maker Yosef Natour.
