The Dirty Blues laid a whipping on the Fog Devils on Friday night. It was a battle of former China Sharks and China Dragon stars, Guo Da Chuan (Danny) and Wang Zhi Qiang (Wanger) and though the latter scored a beautiful end to end goal, Danny’s team had the last laugh. Down 5-2 in the middle of the 2nd, the Fog Devils thought they had their third when DB’s goalie Jamie ‘the Krawler’ Krause pulled a magic trick on the officials to avoid the small two goal cushion. With the net off the moorings for a split second, Krawler pulled the net back in place just as the Fog Devils penetrated his area. After a short conference, the officials ruled no goal and the Dirty Blues never looked back. The 2nd ended up being the only close period as the complete artillery of the Blues was firing to end up with an 11-4 victory. The Fog Devils can take some consolation in the fact they were severely under-manned and didn’t do much to support their man between the pipes.

Ice Cocks roasted the Ducks Friday night with a 4-2 win. The score was closer than the play as Shin stopped 95 of 99 shots sent his way. Ice Cock goals were scored by regular snipers Spahr and Takagi with Ohlrich extending his hot steak and super Kiwi James Kerry getting his first of the year. Karl was huge in net for the Ice Cocks but the Ducks finally scored late with goals by Simon and Bergie.

The Saturday night slate of games kicked off with one for the record books as the last place Drunk Vikings (3W, 14L, -42 Goal differential) were finally able to overcome the “officiating conspiracy” that has plagued them all season to defeat the league leading Paper Tigers (15W, 2L, +46 GD). The game was an instant classic and has officially gone down as the biggest regular season upset in Shanghai Hockey Club and Asia Beer league history.

The first period was a fast paced, back and forth affair until Stu “So hungover” Chan found himself on a breakaway with 10 seconds left and put a nifty move on Barry to give the Vikings a slim 1-0 lead after 1.

The Paper Tigers were able to tie it up in the second as John Antooppalous(sp?)….Anthopopolopous(sp?)……..fuck it – the kid with the nice flow sniped one top cheddar.

Entering the third, tensions were high. The Vikings, however, came out the hungrier bunch and Adam “The Rook” Liu was able to secure their first win in months with a top shelf snipe of his own. Mike Custer sealed the game with an empty net goal late in the period for a final score line of Drunk Vikings 3 – Paper Flies 1. Rob Gray turned back the clock 10 years (maybe 20?) and played his best game of the season in net for the Vikings.

Afterwards, completely ignoring the adage ‘Act like you have been there before,’ the Vikings celebrated like they had just won Shangley’s cup. The Vikings raped and pillaged the SHC liquor cabinet and broke another SHC record by throwing the largest regular season bottle night in league history. It was legend…..wait for it…. DARY.

Brennan scored on a giveaway from Scotti to put APL in the lead 1-0. The crabs woke up when the lines were shuffled for the start of the 2nd period. Cobbett got the Crabs first goal after a quick line change found him behind APL’s D with the puck. Taggert banged home the 2nd goal put make it 2-1 crabs. Rupert found his own rebound in the 3rd for the final goal.

With a chance to move in to sole possession of third place, The Bulldogs went in to Saturday night’s match up with the pesky Pandas with standings on their mind. With the leagues first bottle night since the And the game wasn’t two minutes old before Perro broke in from the blue line uncontested and for the first time in three seasons didn’t choose to go upstairs glove side but instead went to the backhand and buried a simple little deke past the outstretched arms of other iron man goalie of the league Barry Roe filling in for the pandas and once again wondering where half their team was.
Later in the first it was the Dogs showing some offense at the back with Andy Sigfrieds receiving a great feed in the high slot that he deposited in the back of the net as a strange changeup-probably his ode to spring and baseball season kicking off.
After the first period it looked a lot more even and the Pandas set the pace. Even with the low numbers they were flying around and creating pressure and finally broke through on a Graydon rebound in front. This type of play continued back and forth with Mans turning aside a few great opportunities and Barry getting peppered with shots that wouldn’t find the back of the net.
It stayed close until late in to the third until a crisp tic tac toe by the Bulldogs finished off by Cal Wong was yet again a dagger for the competition and what has now become a bit of a signature shift for the boys in Yellow putting teams away late.

The last game of the night was a dogfight, as the Puckhounds took on the Fu Dogs. The Fu Dogs were a bit shorthanded as Jason Ferron ran off to get married. Worried that he couldn’t score without his line mate, he took Martin Magnan with him. With the Fu Dogs missing their French Canadian Pocket-rockets, Puckhounds’ Captain Jason McKelvey decided to test his theory that his team played better without James Dodd and made him a healthy scratch.
PHs opened the scoring in the first when a Jeff Wong screen shot through traffic found the net. Fu Dogs closed the period strong though, with Ron Berg netting 2 late goals about a minute apart. The second period both teams tallied 2 goals. Yuzo Yamada got credit for a goal when Fu Dogs defenseman Jake Kovacik tried to catch a fluttering puck and instead knocked it into the net. Sam Xu added another. On the Fu Dogs side, Brent Campbell got both goals, one on a beauty feed from Bill Longstreet. In the third, Mark Qin tied it with a slick redirect.
OT started with the Fu Dogs shorthanded, allowing them to play dump and chase the full length of the ice. The Puckhounds coughed the puck up to a forechecking Campbell deep in their zone. He got off a harmless weak ass backhander, but the rebound went directly to the ice man, Ron “The Ice” Berg, to ice the game and send the Puckhounds back to the cellar.
Congratulations to Jason & Lilly!
